Once upon a time, MySpace and Facebook were rivals, with the former taking of the lion’s share of the market and the latter being nothing more than an upstart, cutting in on the territory like a hyena on a fresh kill. But, MySpace was not utilizing its self to its own full potential and marketing there was haphazard at the finest.

Flash forward – Facebook is pulling in millions of new profiles every year and the ad revenue generated by that website alone is well over two billion dollars. It is time to stop thinking that social media is a passing fad or just something that can be used as a secondary marketing method. The role that it plays in your online network marketing is big and getting bigger every day.

There was a time when network marketers used social media only as an afterthought to their primary marketing efforts. There were many of them that thought that these social websites were just for kids, that their target demographics were not spending their time on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter, let alone the countless other niche sites that are all over the web. That’s correct, you can target your audience with more than just your ads or other marketing efforts, you can talk straightaway to the people who are most likely to be interested in anything you have to offer.

Social media is more than just a way to advertise in network marketing. Take a massive soft drink company for example. We see their ads all of the time and they might or might not mean an entire lot to us at any point during the day. But, the fact that we can see more info on a social media internet site about a company lets us put a more human face on even the largest corporation.

The role of social media is bigger than just that of the networks, it is bigger than all of the people that belong to each site. Think of all of the things that we expect from our time on those websites for ourselves and that will provide us the clues to how to use social media in our network marketing. We come here to connect with friends, both new and old. We come for data, education and entertainment. We share links, videos and product names and hope that our friends will all do the same.

The average person spends more time on their social media given page than they do virtually anywhere on the web. That same person will have at least ten friends, on average. If you reach one person through social media, you reach all of their friends as well. With that in mind, the role of social media becomes yet bigger and more apparent.
