No matter what your business is, whether you work part-time or full-time, from home or from an office, knowing how to network well is essential to increasing your business and promoting your product. If you’re new to running your own business, you might be wondering what I’m talking about, so let me explain.

What is networking?
Networking has been around as long as there have been businesses. In easy terms, networking is the act of getting together with others to promote your business. If you’ve ever been to a function and seen people exchanging business cards, that’s networking. If you’ve ever told someone you run your own business and explained to them what you do, you were networking. If you’ve ever talked about your business in a tweet or in your status update, you’ve been networking. When described in this way, networking seems so easy, yet so many business owners struggle to network successfully.

How do you network successfully?
One of the hardest parts about networking is putting yourself out there. Many of us are uncomfortable promoting ourselves or ‘talking ourselves up’. But if you want to build a successful business, it’s time to learn just how to promote yourself to everyone.

You might know incisively what your business does but do other people? Never assume that people know what your business is about or what it is you do. An easy, effective networking tool is the ‘elevator speech’.

The elevator speech is a simple, fast, 20 second spiel that you write about your business and that you are comfortable saying to complete strangers. For example, ‘I run a dog walking business known as Let’s go walkies. I pick up dogs from their homes and get them for a walk each day for their owners. Many of my costumers walk long hours and don’t get a chance to exercise their dogs during the week, so I do it for them. My prices are very reasonable. If you know someone who might use a service like this, have them give me a call – here’s my card.’

Networking your business
In today’s world of technology and social media, it’s now easier than ever to network and promote your business. Facebook and Twitter are a fantastic place to start, as are blogging websites. Setting up a page devoted to your business and suggesting it to friends and followers is a good way to get a few free publicity. Facebook in particular has a number of sets for business owners, where they can promote and network within the group page and if you can’t get one to suit your business, you can always start one yourself.

The simplest ways to network and promote yourself and your business are to produce your elevator speech, always have business cards on hand and regularly update your Facebook and Twitter statuses with what’s happening with your business. With these tips, you’ll soon be confident enough to network and promote your business every chance you get.
